Alternative Learning System (A.L.S.) Las Piña s City Jail

High School Level: 37 (29 males and 8 females)
Elementary Level: 13 (10 males and 3 females)

Teachers 3 (2 from Dept. of Education and 1 from City Jail)
Amurt visited the jail and noted improvements in the classroom. A partition was put in place to afford some privacy. A local judge donated an air-conditioning unit for the classroom. A new large whiteboard was also installed. Classes are held every day from Monday to Friday MWF 9 am – 11 am & TTh 10-12 non for males High school level. For females the schedule is TTh 10-12 High School level and Friday 10-12n for elementary level. The program just received the e-learning modules from the Dept. of Education. They are scheduled to be installed soon. These modules were also donated by the same judge.
In the meantime, the computer set donated by “Voice of a Child” has been used to instruct students on word processing applications and social networking. They are taught how to create email address and the use of Facebook. This is done so they can somehow keep in touch with the outside world.
Typing tutorial applications are also installed and taught to the students. However, since the program has only one computer, old keyboard sets are used by the students to simulate correct finger positioning while waiting for their turn on the computer.
The first batch of High School graduates were the first group to be taught on the use of the computer. Today , they assist the jail staff in typing jobs.
The program in charge Sgt. Kent Gamboa promised to submit a more comprehensive progress report and would like to express gratitude for the computer donated. Amurt shall forward the report as soon as it is received. The program definitely needs more computers.
