Cataract Surgery Community Clinic – Fundraising Campaign
Voice of a Child, in collaboration with Abha Seva Sadan Composite Charitable Hospital, is launching a community clinic for cataract surgery in Purulia, West Bengal, India. Purulia district is among the most impoverished in the country, and it has a substantial elderly population suffering from treatable blindness due to cataracts. This initiative aims to provide essential care and restore vision to those in need.
Currently, the hospital diagnoses cataract conditions and refers patients to distant facilities. Unfortunately, many patients are unable to afford travel costs and resign themselves to a life of darkness. Our marketing study indicates that establishing a facility offering free surgeries would be highly effective in alleviating blindness, enabling the elderly population to regain their sight and lead more productive lives. Currently, we are constructing the new facility exclusively for this purpose.
We aim to conduct our first surgery camp by February 2025, with a goal of treating at least 30 patients. Additionally, we plan to restore sight to over 150 patients throughout the year. With your generous support, we can achieve—and even exceed—this goal. Will you join us in making a difference? Together, we can transform lives.
For the villagers, Abha Seva Sadan Hospital is a vital lifeline for their medical needs, with the nearest alternative facility located 25 kilometers away. Established in 1963, the hospital currently serves over 100,000 people from 85 surrounding villages, offering essential healthcare services to this marginalized community.
In the past, we organized annual eye camps using borrowed equipment (see a few pictures below). However, we recognized the urgent need for a permanent eye surgery center to better serve a greater number of patients. This facility will allow us to provide consistent, high-quality care and significantly expand our reach.
