Abha Seva Sadan Composite Charitable Hospital, West Bengal, India

Project Summary

The Abha Seva Sadan Composite Charitable Hospital, founded in 1989, offers medical care to 2,000 to 2,500 outpatients monthly, with many traveling long distances on foot to reach the facility. Located in Purulia district (West Bengal), one of India’s poorest and most neglected regions, the hospital serves a community suffering from poor health conditions, malnutrition, and high illiteracy rates.

The hospital provides a range of treatments using various disciplines, including allopathy, physiotherapy, acupuncture, and homeopathy tailored to the needs of the patients.

Significant strides have been made over the years in enhancing the health conditions of villagers, many of whom are part of indigenous tribal communities. Thanks to the support of donors, modern facilities for eye care, dental services, and physiotherapy have been established.

In early 2023, Voice of a Child formed a partnership with the hospital and has since worked closely with its management to improve facilities and expand the range of services provided.

The hospital is a lifeline for over 100,000 villagers from 85 surrounding villages. Supported by private donations, the facility provides quality care for up to 2500 patients monthly. Recently, we added modern equipment for diagnosis and treatments in eye care, dental services, pathology lab, digital X-ray, and physiotherapy services. Patients receive medications at meager cost, and a fully equipped ambulance is on standby around the clock to handle emergency and life-threatening situations. Specialist doctors, including a gynecologist, dentist, ophthalmologist, and orthopedic specialist visit the hospital weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly to deliver high-quality care. Additionally, mobile medical camps are regularly held in remote villages, and annual eye surgery camps are organized to address specific needs.

Cataract Surgery Clinic

In the remote villages of Purulia, the absence of eye-care facilities has left many elderly individuals with visual impairments without the essential care they need. A simple 5-minute cataract surgery could dramatically change their lives, yet many remain unaware of this quick solution and continue to suffer from partial or complete blindness. While we have been organizing annual eye surgery camps to address this critical need, our goal now is to establish a permanent eye surgery center to provide ongoing support and care.

Care Facility Support

  • Construction of the operation theater
  • Procurement of eye surgery equipment
  • Monthly or lump sum donations to assist with regularly operated eye camps.
