Primary Healthcare, Ebonyi, Nigeria

Project Summary

Since 2010, Voice of a Child (VOC) in partnership with Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team (AMURT) has achieved remarkable success in transforming healthcare in some of Nigeria’s most neglected regions. Initially faced with maternal and newborn mortality rates as high as 1 in 4, these regions now see nearly zero deaths thanks to the dedicated efforts of VOC and AMURT. By expanding from a single clinic to ten fully equipped health centers, the project has provided life-saving procedures, delivered over 27,000 babies, and installed essential medical equipment, such as portable ultrasound machines and ambulances, to ensure timely and effective care.

But our impact goes far beyond healthcare. Through initiatives like the “Every Life Counts” emergency fund and financial assistance systems, we’ve empowered communities by creating economic opportunities for 600 women and installing 227 boreholes to provide safe water. Our future aspirations include strengthening solar power supplies, upgrading facilities, and offering critical nutritional and maternal education services to further enhance community resilience. Your support can help us continue this life-saving journey, ensuring no mother or child is left behind in these vulnerable areas of Nigeria.

Join us in making a transformative difference. By contributing to our ongoing efforts, you help provide essential medical care, safe births, and a hopeful future for countless families. Together, we can turn hope into reality and empower communities to thrive. Discover how you can be a part of this life-saving mission today.

Voice Of a Child (VOC) partnered with the Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team (AMURT) to make a significant impact on healthcare in neglected areas of Nigeria since 2010. Our project sites are often neglected, hard to reach, and lack basic government support. We have drastically reduced mortality rates among mothers and newborns – from 1 in 4 deaths at birth to almost none. Our goal is to ensure no life is lost due to a lack of financial means.

AMURT and VOC emphasize community participation to meet basic healthcare needs in these rural areas. We work with reputable organizations and dedicated staff to help needy children and families. Most importantly, we believe in fostering self-sufficiency and strong values, including giving back to the community.

The Nigeria Project has made a drastic impact over nearly 15 years. Since 2010, we have grown from one clinic to ten health centers with 10 doctors and 250 staff members. Our support has enabled:

  1. The delivery of 27,000 babies at our clinics, including over 1,200 lifesaving C-sections.
  2. All health centers to have an MD on staff and operating rooms.
  3. Four health centers to serve as obstetric emergency referral centers.
  4. The purchase of six portable ultrasound machines to promote maternal health and prenatal services, allowing early detection of life-threatening pregnancy-related complications.

In addition to maternal and fetal health, we address critical conditions needing expert care in advanced hospitals. We have:

  1. Provided eight much-needed ambulances at our rural centers, facilitating 372 emergency referrals in 2023 alone.
  2. Contributed to the purchase of a 4WD vehicle to reach inaccessible communities.
  3. Established the “Every Life Counts” emergency fund, helping emergency medical cases involving mothers, newborns, and children. In 2022, this fund supported 153 pediatric surgeries, many of them complex.

The challenges in these areas are immense, with extreme poverty, lack of clean water and basic electricity, and non-drivable roads. AMURT and VOC have taken on these challenges by:

  1. Installing 227 boreholes to provide safe water.
  2. Setting up a financial assistance system, enabling 600 women to start their own businesses and become economically empowered.

In just one single year, 2022, we were able to:

  1. Perform over 135 pediatric surgeries.
  2. Stabilize 40 malnourished children.
  3. Provide general assistance to orphans and mothers needing nutrition.
  4. Offer emergency medical treatments to victims of communal conflicts.

Our future plans include:

  1. Strengthening our solar power supply to health centers and blood banks.
  2. Upgrading the obstetric operating rooms and maternal care equipment.
  3. Continuing facility construction.
  4. Providing critical nutritional and maternal educational services to save lives and empower the community.

Where VOC puts their focus, mothers and newborns lack the most basic healthcare, facing unimaginable risks every day. In these impoverished, rural, and forgotten areas of Nigeria, your donation can be a beacon of hope. By donating to our project to establish maternal and newborn health centers and education, you provide essential medical care, safe births, and a healthy start to life for the most vulnerable. Your generosity can transform entire communities, ensuring that no mother or child is left without the care they desperately need. Please, join us in making a life-saving difference today.
