Brazil Flood relief update – Camila Guerra

Hi Friends,

Although things have started to get back to the routine, other problems are coming up now.

In Teresópolis and São José a bunch of leptospirosis, a bacterial disease cases are spreading. A friend of my family, a mason, is in Rio de Janeiro now being treated, was infected and is very ill. He lost his house with the flood

So far we have 841 deaths in the regions together and approximately 520 are missing.

A friend of mine who works at Aalborg Industries` branch office in São Paulo arranged a donation from colleagues, clients, some of our representatives and friends. My colleagues at Aalborg Industries in Petrópolis have also donated a lot of things after a campaign we carried out. Donations were delivered and will be taken to the victims in Petrópolis, and São José.

Also, volunteers from our company were organized to serve São José last Saturday to help people clean up their houses. We received plenty of brooms, squeegees and buckets for the work we did.

Besides the inevitable economic downturn all the affected cities will face as an obvious consequence, Petrópolis is suffering a lot as it is essentially a tourist town. All hotels had their reservations canceled and people are not visiting Rua Teresa and other attractions here. When publishing the news on the newspapers, journalists do not mention that city center is fine, untouched and access roads are also fine. So, the city mayor and everybody else is now focusing on informing people that we are able to receive tourists, otherwise, we will have more “victims” of this catastrophe when losing jobs and businesses start to happen.

Well, friends, I am here trying to do what I can to make the victims’ life a bit easier in a way. I feel like solving the problems of all people who lost their homes, their belongings, their relatives and friends. But I also feel that the victims and we all have something to learn from these catastrophes. I feel a degree of satisfaction for doing some good to someone in someways.  I have now learned more deeply that material things of life are temporary and can be snatched away form us any time! What we have is only what we are inside. No one can take that away from us.

Thank you once again for your support,
