Saril Valiyaparambil and Shubhada Pugaonkar, board members of VOC, visited the Pazhassi Raja Tribal School towards the end of January 2013 along with their family. Here is their experience in their own words.
“It was a truly memorable visit for us. Although we have visited the school several times in the past, this was the first time we stayed over for the night at the school. This gave us an opportunity to spend more time with the children as well as experience their full daily routine with them. Some of the highlights for us were the yoga and meditation session at 5.30am in the morning, kalari payattu (traditional martial art) demonstration, football and cricket sessions, evening prayer time and songs by the children.
Our queries about what they wanted to become in future elicited responses such as teacher, policeman, military etc. As it happens every time, the children were very interested in getting their pictures taken and were ever-ready with their sweet smiling faces. We shot some video clips of the school and interviewed the Trust chairman, Dr. Nambiar, Principal, Mrs. Sujatha and some of the teachers. These clips will be used in a video that we are putting together to raise awareness about the financial needs of the school.
Every visit to the school inspires us to do more for these children and this visit was no different. We look forward to sharing our experiences with our friends in US and to inspire them to visit the school during their trip to India.”
